This Week in Aviation Hiring — Oct 31, 2026
Who's hiring, what's moving, and what it means if you're training toward an airline seat — sourced and dated, because hiring changes fast.
The Big Picture
Hiring is open at every rung of the ladder right now. All four majors are recruiting first officers at their published ATP minimums, five regionals were advertising pilot jobs or new-hire incentives in October, and regional fleets are still growing — which is what pulls everyone upward. The other side of that coin: incentives carry end dates and hiring windows cycle. What's open this quarter is information, not a promise — but it is a good quarter to be moving.
Who's Hiring
The majors are all recruiting first officers
Mid-October job-board checks found all four majors with the first officer seat open: American — published minimum 1,500 hours (checked Oct 14, 2026); United — 1,500-hour direct-entry minimum (checked Oct 13, 2026); Delta — 1,500 hours, with 1,000 hours turbine preferred (checked Oct 13, 2026); Alaska — 1,500 hours plus 500 turbine (checked Oct 13, 2026).

SkyWest is hiring at the ATP / R-ATP minimums — and running its cadet pipeline
SkyWest's own pilot jobs page publishes the first officer minimums: unrestricted ATP at 1,500 hours (including 500 cross-country, 100 night, 75 instrument, 25 actual multi-engine), or a restricted ATP at 1,250 hours for qualifying graduates. The Pilot Pathway Program takes students at partner schools — ATP, AeroGuard, and FLT Academy are Elite partners; 15 more schools and universities are Standard partners — and gives cadets a guaranteed first officer interview once they meet minimums. V1Prep's cadet board had SkyWest listed as recruiting as of Oct 15, 2026.

Five regionals were advertising in October — and Envoy's premium has an end date
Endeavor, Envoy, Piedmont, Horizon, and Republic were all advertising pilot jobs or new-hire incentives on their careers sites in October 2026. The sharpest offer: Envoy's 50% pilot supply premium for new first officers, which runs through December 31, 2026 per Envoy's pilot careers site. Endeavor lists a $20,000–$40,000 sign-on bonus for experienced first officers. For pay context, first-year first officer pay across the ten main regionals runs $91,508 (CommuteAir) to $115,062 (Mesa) in ATP Flight School's figures published Oct 14, 2026; SkyWest sits at $106,170.

Trend Watch
SkyWest is growing the fleet that creates the seats
SkyWest, Inc. reported third-quarter 2026 results on Oct 29, 2026: net income of $120 million, four new E175s delivered in the quarter for United, and a fleet of 522 aircraft in service or under contract at September 30 — 276 of them E175s, up from 265 a year earlier. The company expects more than 300 E175s by the end of 2027, with delivery positions for 33 more E175s from 2028–2031 and purchase rights for 50 additional aircraft. Airplanes under contract are what turn into captain upgrades and first officer classes behind them.

For Students
Scholarship season is open — and one deadline is tomorrow
- ISA+21 — closes Nov 1, 2026. The International Society of Women Airline Pilots has three awards due tomorrow: a $5,000 financial scholarship, a $10,000 type-rating scholarship, and a flight-instructor scholarship that covers training. Women on the airline track: this is the urgent one.
- EAA Aviation Foundation — applications due Dec 16, 2026. The 2026–27 post-secondary scholarship cycle is open now; one application covers the named awards.
- AOPA Foundation — fall window closes Dec 31, 2026. One general application matches you to every AOPA Foundation scholarship you qualify for, with awards from $250 to $14,000.

The FAA's first examiner report lands in November
Under Section 833 of the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2024, the FAA has to report to Congress on how designated pilot examiners (DPEs) are being used — including regional scheduling wait times, testing activity, and retest rates. The first reports are planned for publication in November 2026. If checkride availability is the bottleneck in your training right now, this is the document that puts that wait on the official record.

One Move To Make This Week
File the AOPA Foundation scholarship application. One general application — about an hour of work — puts you in the running for every AOPA Foundation award you qualify for, $250 to $14,000, before the window closes Dec 31. Training costs five figures per rating; an hour spent on money that's already on the table is the best-paid hour of your week. (Eligible for ISA+21? Their Nov 1 deadline beats everything — do that one first.)
